Mike: As some of you know, I played soccer from the age of three till I was twelve or thirteen–living within walking distance from Heartwell Park will do that to you. Despite that (or perhaps because of it, since soccer might be the sport that most entices you to play while you’re watching), I could never get into soccer as a spectator sport.
The first time Wilson and Poly played each other this season, they turned a lot of my assumptions on their head. Here was a game where the ‘Rabbits got an early goal, and then played near-perfect defense until the last ten minutes of the game. Wilson scores to tie it, thus keeping their five-year long, fourth-longest league unbeaten streak in CIF history alive–then they score again with just a few minutes left to somehow salvage a win from what was very nearly an historic loss. Thrilling, electrifying, amazing–yes, I am talking about soccer. It was an absolutely crazy game–and you’d be crazy to miss the rematch.
JJ: You’re absolutely right, Mike. Poly and Wilson are the top teams in the Moore League, as proven by their collective perfect records since the January 8th game. Yesterday, while Wilson enjoyed a day off, Poly held tight to their one loss mark with a 4-0 victory over the Jordan Panthers. An early first half goal from Allison Whalen set the tone for the match, and Melina Palacious was on the end of two special passes for two more goals that pretty much ended it before the half.
Poly Coach Terri Collins knows her senior leadership will help in this emotional rematch, “I don’t want to see anything different from my team. This isn’t about revenge. We just need to avoid those little letdowns.”
Wilson has made a living of attacking those opponent “letdowns” and that’s exactly what they’ll do today. Don’t be surprised to see a five mid-field offense from the Bruins as they try to overwhelm the Jackrabbits back line.
