Following the officer-involved shooting that occurred this past Monday night at 8th and Maine, Long Beach Police officials have announced the capture of the suspect who fired at the officer.

The Monday night incident spurred panic within the Willmore District as a perimeter was set up around the area. Less than a day later, LBPD announced that multiple cameras are to be installed in Drake Park in an attempt to calm residential fears.

According to a release, LBPD detectives reviewed evidence in addition to interviewing residents, eventually leading to their identification of suspect Juan Carlos Vasquez, a Long Beach resident. Following the obtaining of a search warrant by the LBPD SWAT Team for the City of Wilmington, 24-year-old Vasquez was arrested.

“I’m proud of the LBPD for their work in arresting a suspect,” said Long Beach Vice Mayor Robert Garcia. “Willmore is a great neighborhood, and this is great news for the community.”

Vasquez, identified as an active gang member, has been booked for the attempted murder of a police officer and is being held without bail.
