Long Beach City Councilmember Robert Garcia will be one of many Latinos interviewed and featured on CNN’s two-part series “Latino In America,” which debuts tonight at 6:00pm. The second part of the series will be televised on Thursday night, at the same time.
The show attempts to show insight into the world of Latino-Americans across the country. It comes on the heels of CNN’s successful “Black In America” series, which debuted in 2008 and sparked a sequel that aired this past July. It examined the lives of black people from all across the country and some of the challenging issues they face. “Latino In America” is produced in the same vein. Garcia and his family immigrated to the United States from Lima, Peru when he was 5 years old.
“I immigrated to the United States at a young age and I am grateful and honored to be in a position where I can serve my community and my country,” said Councilman Garcia, in a press release late last night.
The original series sparked both praise and criticism for its attempt to paint a portrait of everyday black life. Some believed it was an accurate and eye-opening examination, while others felt it was narrow and a misrepresentation. It will be interesting to see reaction to tonight’s series, especially considering that Long Beach is often referred to as the most diverse city in the nation. Will it accurately portray the lives of everyday Latinos? Of everyday Latinos in Long Beach?
