A week after millions across the world demonstrated about climate change—including a small group at Admiral Kidd Park—Long Beach is joining in on the second round of demonstrations on Friday.

Councilwoman Jeannine Pearce announced that she will be joining community members at Bixby Park in the global strike to address the climate change crisis.

City hall workers, including members of the Legislative Department, Public Works, Development Services and the Health Department, will walk or bike along Broadway from City Hall to Bixby Park, according to a press release from Pearce’s office. The march will start at noon and the rally at the park will start at 12:30 p.m.

The protesters hope to draw attention to climate change during the United Nations Climate Action Summit that started this week, Pearce’s office said.

Pearce pointed to the city’s work, including drafting a climate change plan and adding bike infrastructure, as progress the city is making toward their goals.

“While Long Beach is headed in the right direction, we must do more. Our children deserve to see us fight for their lives,” Pearce said in a written statement. “We need to show the nation and the world that Long Beach is a leader in climate change. In doing this, we will be bold. We must prioritize the health and well-being of families and neighborhoods.”
