2:45pm | A Long Beach family of five received the surprise of a lifetime this week when Mayor Bob Foster showed up on their doorstep to tell the Lopez family that they had been selected as the recipients of a new house from Habitat For Humanity. Councilmember Robert Garcia also helped deliver the news, as the Lopez family lives in his 1st District.
“It was a pleasure to meet the Lopez family and tell them the great news that they were selected to be the recipients of the HFH GLA’s Mayor’s Build home,” said Mayor Bob Foster. “We’re all looking forward to helping them build and move into their new Long Beach home.”
The home is sponsored by Foster, and construction will begin at the end of this summer. Foster will assist in building the home along with the Lopez family and local volunteers. Union Bank has donated $25,000 toward the cause.
The Lopez family qualified for the home by meeting income guidelines, demonstrating a need and agreeing to volunteer 500 hours toward building their home and working at other Habitat For Humanity locations.
Enrique Lopez works at St. Mary Hospital while his wife Sonia is a childcare worker for the Long Beach Unified School District. Their sons Angel and Anthony attend school in Long Beach and Adan is one year old.
