Anthony Glen Gorospe–the man who allegedly shot a City code officer and then engaged Long Beach Police in a nearly seven-hour standoff at his North Long Beach home last Thursday–was charged yesterday with 15 felony counts, including 11 for assault with a deadly weapon and four for attemped murder, said Lisa Massacani of the Long Beach Police Department.

On Monday afternoon, however, 51 year-old Gorospe refused to leave his cell at Long Beach City Jail, and his arraignment was postponed until Wednesday while authorities obtain a court order to forcibly remove him.

Gorospe was officially booked just after midnight on Friday and was held in lieu of $500,000 bail. His ordeal began Thursday morning when just before 8AM, a city inspector, a uniformed LBPD police officer and a cleaning crew arrived at his one-story house on the 6100 block of N. John Ave. to remove debris from the blighted front yard. Gorospe allegedly opened fire from inside and a bullet grazed the city inspector near the eyebrow. The inspector is expected to make a full recovery.

For hours after the alleged shooting, Gorospe remained barricaded inside his home, occasionally firing rounds and shouting at officers to kill him. It wasn’t until nearly 3PM on Thursday when LBPD SWAT team members were able to finally extract Gorospe with the help of some tear gas, tactical vehicles and a police dog.

City code inspectors had made several visits to Gorospe’s house over the years without incident, but The Press-Telegram reported that neighbors said Gorospe’s hoarding tendencies had escalated in the last year, after the death of his mother.
