The Red Cross will provide assistance to a family of four after their house near Drake Park suffered heavy damage in a fire this afternoon. No one was injured.

The fire apparently began outside but then traveled into the house, which is home to a mother and three children. The mother was notified of the fire by neighbors and ran upstairs to check for her children. One son was inside and both exited safely with assistance from the first firefighters to arrive. Another son and one daughter were not home.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to control and eventually extinguish the fire. They fought the blaze from inside and also cut holes in the roof to gain access to problem areas. Damage is estimated at about $75,000-$100,000 on the Victorian style home, near the 1200 block of Loma Vista Drive.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the LBFD Arson Bureau, as is customary in this situation.
