11:00am | Across the nation, people are facing hard times. Budgets are dwindling, belts are tightening. For some, luxuries are no longer an option and for others, neither are necessities. Long Beach is no exception and many are struggling to get by.

How would you help?

If you had the opportunity to help someone in need, who would you help and how? That question is the basis behind the 3rd annual Giving Project, hosted by local activist Justin Rudd and his non-profit Community Action Team (CAT).

The Giving Project is Rudd’s brainchild, designed to help you help others.

The first stage of the project consists of eight CAT volunteers who are charged with giving away $1,000 however they see fit. This Saturday, March 27, all eight contestants will explain their methods in a presentation to judges, and the winner will be awarded an extra $1,000 to give away.

The second stage is where you come in.

Rudd is asking for additional ideas, and he wants to know what you would do with $250 to give to someone in need. Who would you help? What would you do? Leave a comment below or send an email to [email protected] with the who, what, where, why, when and how of your idea, and it may become a reality.

Eight ideas will be chosen as finalists at midnight this Friday, March 26, and asked to attend the reception on Saturday, where judges will hear a one-minute pitch and decide who will receive $250 to make their dream come true. Please include your e-mail and phone number with your project idea so you can be contacted if you are chosen.

Submit your idea by comment or e-mail by this Friday, March 26.

Past projects have included gifts such as bus passes, baby clothes, school uniforms, prom tickets, rent payments, utility bill payments, office supplies and much more.

More than $11,000 in goods and services – not cash – will be given away this year.
