10:15am | More than 32,000 people are without jobs in Long Beach as the local unemployment rate rose very slightly to 13.8%, according to not seasonally adjusted October statistics from the state Employment Development Department.

The unemployment rate in Long Beach had been showing slight, but consistent, improvement over the past few months but took a step back in October.

It hit a high of 14.6% in July of this year, then improved to 14.2% in August and 13.7% in September before the slight rise in October.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County remained consistent at 12.6% for the third consecutive month, which is higher than the 12.3% rate posted in October one year ago.

Great gains were made in the areas of government, education and health jobs, which “accounted for more than 80-percent of the month-over gains in the sectors adding jobs to the economy,” according to the EDD. The state’s largest county posted the 28th best rate out of 58 counties.

Unemployment stands at 12.4% in California and 9.6% across the nation.
