Police and fire personnel gathered Tuesday morning near Shoreline Marina for an annual memorial service honoring those who have died in the line of duty.

This was the first service since the death of Capt. David Rosa, who was fatally shot while responding to a call on June 25. Rosa’s wife, Lynley, and other family members attended the event.

The son, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Long Beach police officer Robert Birdsall also attended. Birdsall was shot and killed in 1975 while searching for a suspect wanted for armed robbery, kidnapping and attempted murder.
