12:15am | Domestic violence occurs within same-sex relationships just as it does in heterosexual relationships. But it is under-reported for a number of reasons.
First, many who suffer abuse from a same-sex partner are afraid that law enforcement will be unsympathetic. Some who are not open about their sexual orientation suffer in silence because they are not ready to disclose to family, friends and co-workers. Finally, some gay activists have been critical of any discussion or reporting of domestic violence cases within the gay community because it “makes us look bad.”
The Center in Long Beach is providing help. Interval House recently renewed their long time support for The Center with a donation of $10,000. Since 1979, Interval House has targeted communities challenged by cultural and language barriers, developing cross-cultural and multi-lingual programs that have been recognized with over 400 awards, including three Presidential Awards and two Governor’s Awards, citing Interval House as a “model” domestic violence program to the nation. Together Interval House and The Center collaborate to offer assistance to LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning) victims of domestic violence. The Center also hosts Healthy Relationship discussion groups, lead by Interval House staff, for LGBTQ clients weekly.
