A man pepper-sprayed, and later shot at another man who had threatened him with knife, police said Saturday.

No one was injured in the incident, which happened in the 1800 block of Appleton Street in Alamitos Beach at approximately 9:03 p.m. Friday, according to Long Beach Police Department spokesman Richard Mejia.

Upon arrival, officers contacted a man, who told police he was walking with a woman outside her home when he had a verbal altercation with another man, who brandished a knife. The victim then pepper-sprayed the man, police said.

Immediately after this incident, police said the two victims returned to the residence. The suspect then struck the front security door with a knife, which allegedly resulted in the male victim shooting a firearm toward the suspect, said police. No one was struck by the gunfire.

According to Mejia, officers located evidence, including bullet casings and strike marks, indicating a shooting had occurred. The suspect fled before officers arrived.

Police said no suspect information is available and the investigation is ongoing.
