According to an analysis of the 710 corridor project’s Environmental Impact Report (EIR) by L.A. Streetsblog, the logic that drives the report’s affirmative, go-ahead-with-the-project mentality is, despite the honesty Caltrans provided in stating that the air pollution will increase, heavily skewed.

The article maintains that the report, conducted and issued by Caltrans, heavily depends on decades-old thinking that bigger highways with more lanes means better traffic flow — when in fact, Caltrans fails to take into account “induced demand,” the theory that posits that expanding the amount of lanes only results in those lanes being filled within a few years, therefore bringing back (again) the demand for a larger freeway.
