Richard Conant of the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) has been promoted to police commander and Robert Smith has been assigned to the position of West Division Commander, announced Chief Robert Luna.
Conant, a 24-year veteran, started working for the LBPD in 1991. He was promoted to sergeant in 2006 and to lieutenant in 2011. He most recently served as the Lieutenant in the Internal Affairs Division.
During his time with the LBPD, Conant has held positions on patrol, homicide, gang enforcement, the office of the Chief of Police and the SWAT team.
Smith, who currently serves as the Commander of the Internal Affairs Division and has been with the LBPD since 1990, will begin his new assignment in the West Division on January 10.
He has worked as a patrol officer, field training officer, community policing officer, special enforcement section and drug enforcement detective. At one point, he also led the LBPD’S Community Oriented Public Safety (COPS) Office.
