Due to the rise in motorcycle-related accidents over the past decade, the LBPD conducts frequent safety enforcement operations focusing on motorcyclists. The latest resulted in the citation of over 45 violations.
Prompted by the fact that within the past decade, motorcyclists accounted for 14% of accidents though they account for only 1% of traffic, the LBPD has chosen to consistently conduct safety enforcement operations focused on these motorists.
The latest effort occurred on Saturday, June 30th and included saturated patrol units placed at undisclosed locations throughout the South and East divisions of the City. During the enforcement–the results of which were released on Friday–over 45 violations were cited including 15 helmet violations, ten motorcycle equipment violations, three, motorcycle moving violations, a motorcycle license endorsement violation and 20 vehicle moving violations. One motorcycle was also impounded.
The LBPD reminds riders that they can get training through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program, and more information can be found on the program’s website, www.CA-msp.org, or by calling 877-RIDE-411 (877-743-3411). Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
