After more than six weeks of allowing Westside residents the opportunity to contribute to the City’s latest piece of the Long Beach Mural Project, artist Jose Loza‘s 25 foot-long design was permanently affixed to a wall outside the Long Beach Police Department’s West Division’s Police Sub-Station this past weekend.

Placed on a convex, curved wall facing the front doors of the West Division’s Police Sub-Station on Santa Fe Ave., the mural was a collaborative effort between LBPD, Loza and the number of youth and community members who showed up at Admiral Kidd Park every Saturday to add to the large piece of fabric on which the artwork was painted.

Designed with the help of West Division Commander Josef Levy and others in the Department (and using real community members as models!), Loza’s mural features images that fit the theme of police and community relationship and also includes accents—such as shipping, transportation and historic photos—that represent life on the Westside.

“When you’re working in a community, it’s important to have input from the people,” Loza said at Monday’s dedication ceremony. “This mural is representative of the community here and of West Long Beach as a whole.”

Loza is a longtime West Long Beach resident and has contributed many murals to the City’s public arts projects.
