The Long Beach Unified School District is surveying students in fourth-through-12th grades, as well as all parents, about the “culture and climate” of district campuses.

“The surveys, all of which are available for review on our website, are an important part of our accountability and school improvement plans,” reads an email sent to LBUSD parents last week.

The survey is part of the district’s participation in the California Office to Reform Education partnership, which comprises several of the state’s largest school districts. The mission of CORE, according to the organization, is to build educators’ improvement capabilities, share data and to develop network strategies so that schools and districts can learn from each other.

Questions for parents include inquiries about whether they feel their children are safe on campus, as well as in the neighborhoods around their school. There are also questions about parents’ awareness of the Long Beach College Promise and the likelihood that they’d send their student to Long Beach City College or Cal State Long Beach. Questions for students include inquiries about whether or not they feel safe on campus, comfortable talking to adults, and about their comfort with technology.

The survey is conducted by Panorama Education, a district partner on these CORE surveys for the last few years; Panorama has also partnered with San Francisco Public Schools and the Norwalk/La Mirada Unified School District on recent surveys.

The surveys are available via a link sent to LBUSD parents via email and can be completed through March 17 on any computer, smartphone or tablet.

The district said its goal is at least 20% parent participation at each school, and that survey results will remain confidential.
