Under the advisement of city and county health officials, the Long Beach Unified School District confirmed Friday what most have expected: the district will not be able to hold in-person graduation ceremonies this year.

There had been a possibility of scheduling a delayed graduation ceremony, but ongoing uncertainty around when things can be rescheduled has made that impossible.

According to a district release, “The school district is working diligently to provide a memorable, virtual graduation celebration. Additional information on virtual graduation and other close-of-school processes will be coming soon to families and school staff.”

The district also confirmed it will be limiting summer activities dramatically. No sports activities will be allowed to take place, or any large student/staff gatherings. Summer school will be online-only.

Finally, for parents who have “September 1” circled on the calendar as the start of the next school year, the district says that while the planned start date hasn’t changed, “The new school year will not be ‘business as usual,’ requiring the school district to explore a variety of adjustments.”

According to the district release, a survey will be posted soon to develop community feedback in planning the fall semester and a return to school.
