Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles will hold a free Prop. 47 record expungement clinic at Long Beach City College (LBCC) next Saturday, tailored to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

Although there is not a great deal of data breaking down populations interacting with police beyond broad race categories, certain Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander communities are arrested and incarcerated at high rates,” said Stephanie Lin, an Equal Justice Works Americorps Fellow who works with the foundation. “For example, in 2006, Samoans had the highest arrest rate of any ethnic group in Oakland. Unfortunately, there are few re-entry services targeting the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community, so we wanted to host a culturally competent clean slate legal clinic in the languages spoken in these communities.”

The clinic will be held from 10:00AM to 1:00PM on Saturday, May 21 at LBCC in room GG238, located at 1305 East Pacific Coast Highway.

Prop. 47 reclassifies six non-violent felonies to misdemeanors, including simple drug possession, shoplifting under $950, petty theft under $950, forger or insufficient funds under $950 and receiving stolen property under $950.

Those eligible to get their record expunged must not currently be on probation or parole and not currently charged with a new offense, foundation officials stated.

Attendees should bring either of the following: case docket, which can be obtained from any county courthouse at the clerk’s office, and RAP sheet, available from the Department of Justice.
