The Equality Plaza Selection Committee is now accepting 2017 nominations to honor leaders of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and/or Queer (LGBTQ) community for the Equality Plaza Memorial Wall of Harvey Milk Promenade Park.

Since 2012, the Equality Plaza has celebrated individuals who have given their time, talents and passion to help advance the Long Beach LGBTQ community with high ethical standards.

“While our current selection committee represents a wide cross section of the Long Beach [LGBTQ] community, we recognize that input from the community is important in identifying those pioneers and community leaders, both past and present, who have shown exceptional service or made outstanding contributions to the greater Long Beach LGBTQ community,” Raul Añorve, chairman of the Equality Plaza Selection Committee, said in a statement.

Last year, Equality Plaza recognized Jim Deaton, former president of the Teacher’s Association of Long Beach; Lee Glaze, who led a peaceful protest against homophobic police harassment in 1968; Audrey Stephanie Loftin, first openly lesbian president of the Women’s Lawyers of Long Beach, former president of the Long Beach Lambda Club and founding member of the Long Beach Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce; and Marsha Naify, former president of the Long Beach Lambda Club as well as the Long Beach Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

Potential nominees could be living or deceased and must have or had identified as LGBTQ. Applications should include a short biography of the candidate. Submissions will be accepted until March 31, and the awarded names will be announced in the spring.

To place a nomination, complete an online submission form here.

Harvey Milk Promenade Park is located at 185 East Third Street.
