The city’s Litter-Free Long Beach Campaign has been selected to receive the 2007 Communications, Education and Marketing Award of Excellence from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA).

“We are very proud that SWANA has chosen to acknowledge the accomplishments of our Litter-free Long Beach Campaign,” said City Manager Patrick West.  “Cities throughout the United States struggle with the impacts of litter.  Our campaign is a model program and can be replicated by other cities.”

The Award of Excellence will be presented on Thursday, October 18, in Reno, at WASTECON, the annual solid waste exposition for SWANA.

The Litter-Free Long Beach Campaign makes use of multi-lingual and multi-cultural messages that encourage personal responsibility and environmental stewardship.  Incorporating creative and innovative marketing, education and outreach programs, the Campaign represents a citywide effort with residents and businesses to create more vibrant business corridors, safer neighborhoods, and a cleaner and healthier environment.

The campaign also reaches students through the popular Lunch with a Lizard program, which features the costumed Mr. Scales teaching the value of keeping schools, streets and neighborhoods litter-free.
