10:50am | Wow. You sure do have a busy, fun weekend ahead of you.
You’re already planning on soaking in some reggae on the Queen Mary with the Uwanajama concert on Saturday evening, but before you do that don’t forget that you really wanted to go to Puengen Minagof, a live performance that weaves Pacific Island culture into a tale about a Long Beach man headed down the wrong path. Traditional Chamoru music and dance describe the young man’s journey to Guahan in a search for his past.
Shows begin at 5:00pm and 7:00pm at the Long Beach Scottish Rite at 855 Elm Avenue, with tickets running at $15 per person. Filmmaker Shawn Sourgose directs the show while Long Beach resident Heidi Quenga handles choreography.
“It’s a rich mosaic of Pacific Island cultures,” said Quenga, who blended themes of ancient Spanish and modern Chamoru dance into the performance. “It’s a journey of self-identity and finding the strength of family through the complexity of adolescence.”
The soon-to-be-opened Pacific Islands Ethnic Art Museum is involved in the show and will hold a VIP Reception immediately preceding the play. Located at 695 Alamitos Avenue, the museum will open sometime this summer.
