7:56pm | Several area state Assembly members plan to host a town hall meeting in Long Beach on Thursday to discuss with constituents the latest updates and current status of the state’s ongoing budget crisis.
Assemblymen Warren Furutani, D-South Los Angeles and Isadore Hall III, D-Compton, and Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, are teaming to host the interactive event in an effort to educate their respective constituents in the 55th, 52nd and 54th Assembly Districts.
The meeting will be facilitated by Next 10, an independent, non-partisan organization that seeks to educate Californians on the state’s budget.
According to information provided by Furutani’s office, attendees will be able to take the Next 10 Challenge which asks challenge takers to take a stab at balancing the state’s budget.
The town hall will be held this Thursday, April 28, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at The Expo, 4321 Atlantic Ave. in Bixby Knolls.
California is facing a monstrous $28 billion deficit, and partisan politics and political pandering have thus far prevented the two parties in the state Assembly and Senate from agreeing on a number of controversial bills within Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposed budget package.
Brown discontinued budget negotiations with Republicans last month after it became apparent that they would continue to refuse to budge on their wide-sweeping demands as outlined in a seven-page list of policy changes.
