8:45pm | A Long Beach man driving early Saturday morning died after he crashed into a traffic signal pole, police said.
The victim, identified as 59-year-old Ruperto B. Cinco, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to information provided by Long Beach Police Department Sgt. Rico Fernandez.
Fernandez said the department received a call for service at about 5:18 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, regarding a traffic collision at the intersection of Orange Avenue and Carson Street. .
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Cinco’s 1995 Dodge Caravan smashed up against a traffic signal pole. The officers began to provide medical aid to Cinco, the only passenger in the vehicle, until Long Beach Fire Department paramedics arrived and took over the administration of life-saving procedures Fernandez said.
Cinco, however, succumbed to his extensive injuries before he could be transported to a nearby hospital, he said.
Fernandez said that a preliminary investigation has revealed that Cinco was heading south on Orange when, for an unknown reason, the van drifted across the intersection and collided with the pole.
No other vehicles appear to have been involved, Fernandez said.
