After a 7.8-magnitude earthquake devastated parts of Turkey and Syria last week and left more than 30,000 people dead, local organizations are desperate to help.

The American Turkish Association of Southern California has coordinated an effort to raise money for those affected and is currently taking in-person donations in Long Beach for critical items.

According to organizer Brad Yesilbag, critical items that are in urgent need include disaster tents, blankets, sleeping bags, diapers, feminine hygiene products and baby clothes. All items donated must be new and unopened.

The ATASC is currently accepting donations in-person at the Barsan Global Logistics warehouse in West Long Beach from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and they will do so at least until Thursday, Feb. 16.

“The American Turkish Association of Southern California is saddened by the news of the devastating earthquake in southern Türkiye early Monday morning and expresses its deepest sympathies to all the families who have lost loved ones,” the organization wrote in a message on its website.

Monetary donations can be made via Zelle or PayPal to [email protected], and the organization will match the first $3,000 donated.

The funding will be allocated directly toward those most affected by the deadly earthquake through a partnership with Turkish Philanthropy Funds.
