The Long Beach Unified School District employs more people than any other business in this city, and the district is trying to add even more employees to its ranks with a pair of recruiting events this week.

First, LBUSD will host a virtual information session on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m. for certificated and classified staff who are interested in growing into a leadership role by becoming an administrator or manager.

“Every year, we’ve attracted high quality teachers who come and have an opportunity to not just attend but really try to create a match with a district that matches values,” said David Zaid, LBUSD’s assistant superintendent of human resources.

Then, on Thursday, Feb. 16, the LBUSD is hosting a recruitment night for teachers and administrators at Cabrillo High School from 5:30-7 p.m. It will feature information stations for salary, benefits, special education, dual immersion programs and certificated leadership programs.

“We want to attract not only new teachers, but also experienced teachers,” Zaid said. “We’re also looking for champions of excellence and equity. We need individuals who are really dedicated to continuous improvement, high quality instruction, caring student relationships and an unwavering commitment to equity.”

Superintendent Jill Baker will be at the recruitment night to speak about the employment opportunities with LBUSD. In the last two years, the event has had over 500 prospective educators RSVP.

“Equity leadership and talent development in LBUSD looks like programs for a teacher who is interested in increasing their skill sets as a teacher leader, and then a series of programs that take a teacher leader all the way through aspirations of wanting to become a superintendent,” Baker said in a video.

“After every professional development (event) I was able to walk away with a tool or a recourse that helped me with resolving some type of conflict or making better and informed decisions,” Lakewood High School Assistant Principal Lloyd Wilson said in the same video.

The in-person event at Cabrillo High will also include information labels from the Teachers Association of Long Beach, as well as Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Dominguez Hills representatives from their credentialing programs. Zaid said LBUSD also wants to work with prospective educators who just graduated college and want to work on their credentials.

“Anyone who shows up, we have a type of job for you,” Zaid said.
