Long Beach health officials reported two new COVID-19 deaths Tuesday after reporting just one death over the previous 37 days.

City officials have said that sometimes the city learns of a death weeks or months after it happens because of lags in reporting from other jurisdictions and delays in death certificates being processed.

However, there was no disclaimer attributing the two deaths reported Tuesday to a different month. The two new deaths bring the city’s total to 937 people who have died from the COVID-19 pandemic as of May 24.

The city last reported a death May 11.

The city’s daily update said that there are 15 Long Beach residents currently hospitalized with COVID-19 with 22 total people in area hospitals. City data showed an increase of 33 cases in the city since Saturday.

To date the city has logged 53,328 total positive tests but the number of infections in the city have dropped dramatically in recent months as more people have been vaccinated in Long Beach.

The city’s data dashboard showed that over 63% of residents over the age of 16 had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine as of Monday.
