Some residents in the South Wrigley area were evacuated or told to shelter in place until a police SWAT team arrested a suspect who had barricaded himself inside a vehicle.

Police were called to the 2300 block of Long Beach Boulevard at about 5:51 a.m. Sunday after a call regarding a verbal altercation between a man and woman.

The situation escalated when one person physically assaulted the other, police said.

When officers arrived on the scene, the suspect refused to comply with officer’s commands. Officers established a perimeter and called in SWAT.

After some time, the suspect complied with officers’ commands and was taken into custody without incident, police said.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital for an unrelated health condition; however, he will be transported to Long Beach City jail for booking following medical clearance, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
