Police say they’ve arrested a man suspected of shooting a man in West Long Beach Saturday night.
According to the Long Beach Police Department, at approximately 8:01 p.m. Saturday night, officers were dispatched to the area of Santa Fe Avenue and Willow Street regarding a shooting.
Upon arrival, officers found a man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body, who was then transported to a local hospital by the Long Beach Fire Department, said LBPD.
Authorities said that the preliminary investigation suggested the victim was driving his vehicle southbound on Santa Fe Avenue when approached by a vehicle driven by an unknown male adult suspect.
After a brief verbal exchange, the suspect discharged a firearm at the victim’s vehicle, striking the victim, LBPD said.
The suspect fled in an unknown direction prior to LBPD’s arrival, said police, although a short while later, officers observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle in the area where the shooting occurred. Officers conducted a traffic stop and detained the driver, LBPD said.
Through their investigation, officers discovered the driver of the vehicle was a suspect in the shooting, said police.
Officers arrested the suspect and transported him to Long Beach City jail for booking. The suspect was identified as Leon Shillingford, a 24-year-old resident of Redondo Beach, who was booked on attempted murder and a parole violation, according to LBPD. Bail was set at $1 million.
