11:01pm | Veteran’s Stadium was bustling Wednesday evening, when Long Beach City College students donned caps and gowns and their loved ones looked on proudly during the junior college’s annual commencement ceremony.

An estimated 1,500 students of all ages who earned certificates and associate’s degrees at the close of the 2010-2011 school year participated in the graduation exercise.

According to a college spokesman, the school passed out 545 associate in arts and associate in science degrees and 545 certificates of completion. About 1,300 of the graduates are expected to transfer to four-year universities in the fall.

Long Beach Unified School District Superintendent Christopher Steinhauser served as commencement speaker, and the end-of-the-year address was given by the school’s superintendent-president, Eloy Oakley.

The commencement ceremony was Oakley’s fifth since taking the school’s helm.

The ceremony, which was streamed live online, was followed by a reception held on the stadium’s north field.
