About 100 community members, clergy and local leaders are expected to gather in downtown Long Beach this evening to protest the Trump Administration’s practice of separating families who are seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border.

The march and rally is in solidarity with the nationwide movement Families Belong Together, which opposes the separation of children from their parents as well as the conditions in which the children are kept.

Local resident Linda Valdez said she helped organize the event recognizing the diversity of the city and the potential pressure the protest can have on the administration.

“This march and rally is really to bring people together and to coincide with the national effort,” Valdez said. “We also want to emphasize that we can put pressure on this administration to stop the terrorizing of people and families at the border, that this actually can make a change.”

Members of Greater Long Beach Interfaith Community Organization (ICO), Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE), and Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition (LBIRC) are some of the participating organizations.

The event in Long Beach is expected to take place Thursday, June 14 at 6:00PM at 501 West Ocean Boulevard.
