Long Beach is expecting another storm surge with higher than normal water levels near the Peninsula and Naples this weekend.

The storm surge is being caused by Hurricane Norbert in the eastern Pacific Ocean, and is expected to impact southeast Long Beach from Friday through Monday, city officials said.

City crews are fortifying sand berms on both the beach and bay sides of the Peninsula, installing plugs in the Naples sea wall to prevent flooding, and deploying additional staff and equipment around the clock, as well as closely monitoring the situation.

Community Emergency Response Teams and the Long Beach Search and Rescue Explorer Program will contact Peninsula and Naples residents to plan for the event.

Bins of sand and empty bags will be available beginning Friday at 9AM in the areas of Ocean Boulevard and 72nd Place, as well as Ocean Boulevard and Claremont Avenue. Residents must bring their own shovels and are limited to filling 10 bags.
