Long Beach firefighters rescued a woman in her 30s who had fallen while cycling from the beach path onto the rocky San Gabriel Riverbed today, injuring her head.

Around 2:10PM today, the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) received a call regarding a woman who had fallen 20 feet onto the riverbed. 

According to LBFD Spokesperson Jake Heflin, the woman was not wearing a helmet, and she sustained multiple injuries.

“She fell off her bike into rolling asphalt mixed with rock,” said Heflin. According to him, the fall occurred on the East Bike Path along the river, on the side closest to the 605.

LBFD Spokesperson Brian Fisk said the woman sustained a head injury and minor lacerations to extremities. She was transported to a local trauma hospital and is in stable condition, he said.

According to Fisk, a rope rescue was not required in the situation, as is the norm in most river rescues, and officers were able to hoist her from the riverbed without any additional equipment.
