10:15am | The Long Beach City Manager’s Office announced Tuesday morning that the city health officer has issued an advisory for beaches citywide due to the rain.
City Health Officer Dr. Helene Calvet said in a media release that following any significant rainfall of a tenth of an inch or more, high levels of bacteria from storm drains, rivers and polluted runoff enter into the ocean.
Residents should avoid any form of contact with ocean water for at least 72 hours after the rainfall has ceased. Storm drain outlets, river mouths, streams and lagoons should especially be avoided, officials said.
The public is advised to always pay particular attention to any warning signs posted at the beach or near other bodies of water, officials said.
The Department of Health and Human Services Water Quality Program continues to conduct water quality monitoring activities, and additional advisories will be issued as necessary.
