A 69-year-old Long Beach man has been charged with sexually assaulting and murdering his roommate last week, police said today.

Kerry Johnson appeared in court and pleaded not guilty Monday to one count each of murder and rape, according to court records.

Johnson was originally taken into custody on June 3 after officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of West 25th Street to assist the Long Beach Fire Department with a medical emergency, according to police.

Johnson’s 66-year-old female roommate was dead at the scene when officers arrived, according to the LBPD. Police haven’t released her identity pending notification of her family.

Officers’ preliminary investigation revealed “suspicious circumstances” surrounding the death, and homicide detectives responded to the scene, police said. While the investigation continued, officers took Johnson into custody and booked him on suspicion of violating his parole for a previous conviction, police said.

During their investigation, detectives found evidence that the victim suffered a sexual assault in addition to major trauma to her upper torso, which resulted in her death, police said.

Johnson is currently being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.
