8:43am | The Long Beach Police Department believes that statistics will show a decline in violent crime citywide compared to previous years, though the numbers are not official and tallying the information has not yet been completed.
Despite not concluding the examination yet, authorities are predicting that some crimes will see their lowest levels in decades, “despite population growth and other factors,” according to a press release. In total, violent crimes have declined by 15% compared to 2009 and property crimes have declined by 9.6%.
“In times of limited resources and a reduction in staff, I am very proud of the men and women of the Long Beach Police Department, as well as our partners in the community who serve as our eyes and ears- their involvement aids in our success,” said Long Beach Chief of Police Jim McDonnell, in a statement.
Current numbers show that murder is down by 24.4%, robbery by 15.1% and aggravated assault by 16.1%.
“Utilizing current technology, streamlining our operations, and taking a new approach to fighting crime has served as a force multiplier, enabling us to work smarter and continue to make Long Beach a safer place to live, work and play.”
