An article in the Los Angeles Times today looks back on a record boom year for the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles in 2010, and looks ahead to what many believe will continue to be a prosperous year in 2011.
Over the past twelve months, incoming cargo increased by more than 20-percent and production nearly returned to its 2007 high point. Experts say that as the economy recovered, more shipping lines came to the West Coast because of their ability to operate much faster than their competitors. It’s that advantage that will keep Long Beach and Los Angeles on top again in the new year.
As Times reporter Ronald D. White explains, it all boiled down to one simple question in 2010:
Why rely on ports that move a million cargo containers in six months to a year when Los Angeles and Long Beach can move that much in three weeks?
