9:01am | Long Beach police shot and injured a man suspected of beating his wife Saturday night, authorities said.
Officers responded to a call for service at an apartment near 11th Street and Orange Avenue at about 11 p.m. Saturday, May 14, after a neighbor called 911 to report hearing a woman crying and objects being thrown inside the residence, according to information provided by Sgt. Rico Fernandez.
The suspect, who has only been identified as a 20-year-old man, was uncooperative, resulting in an officer-involved shooting, Fernandez said.
More than one officer discharged their service weapons, Fernandez said, though he would not specify how many or what prompted the officers to open fire. The man was shot multiple times, Fernandez said.
The man sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Fernandez said, and remained in the hospital as of Sunday morning.
The Long Beach Police Department is investigating the cause of the shooting, and the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent probe, which is typical of all officer-involved shootings, Fernandez said.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact LBPD Detectives Teryl Hubert or Mark Bigel by calling 562-570-7244.
