12:30am | The Long Beach Police Department will beef up patrols in the area where a 17-year old male was shot in the upper body on Monday evening. As of Tuesday afternoon, authorities said that the boy remained in grave condition.
“Because of the events of the past couple days, I’m sure there will be more officers in the area making sure that people are staying inside and not walking around late at night,” said LBPD Sergeant Dina Zapalski. “They will be doing enforcement on any curfew violators after the hours of ten p.m. – throughout the whole city.”
The boy was shot at the corner of Pacific and Cypress around 10:00pm Monday night, and Police have released few details and no information about possible suspects.
Police told employees of nearby businesses Tuesday that about six shots were fired, as they investigated the scene were the teenager was shot in the upper body and fell in the Pacific Avenue street. Gang activity is prevalent in the area, the employees said, and graffiti decorates much of the local property.
The shooting was the third in Long Beach in two nights.
On Sunday evening, a man was shot near Pine & Plymouth at 8:41pm and is expected to survive. Few details have been released about the incident.
Shots rang out again at 7th & Magnolia around 10:00pm Sunday and a 12-year old boy was shot in the cheek as he left a family barbeque. LBPD Chief Jim McDonnell said Tuesday evening that it’s a miracle the boy survived. Two 15-year old boys were also shot as they rode their bicycles down 8th & Daisy in what authorities are investigating as a related incident.
Sgt. Zapalski could not say whether the triple shooting Sunday was related to the nearby incident on Monday night. Investigators are looking into the possibility, however.
