The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) will be deploying additional officers for special DUI saturation patrols as part of efforts to deter impaired driving this Cinco de Mayo weekend.

The patrols will include stopping and arresting drivers showing signs of alcohol or drug impairment beginning Saturday at 6:00PM and ending early Sunday morning at 2:00AM.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) and California Highway Patrol (CHP) will also be out in force looking for the tell-tale signs of impaired driving this weekend, according to a release from the LBPD.

“In the rush to prepare for a night out, it’s easy to forget the most important Cinco de Mayo plan of all: designating a sober driver,” officials said in a statement. “Some may think they can play it by ear and wait until after the party has started to decide whether they’re “okay to drive.” By this point, it’s too late. Going out for a night of drinking without a plan for getting home safely is a recipe for disaster.”

Officials said that in recent years, California has seen an increase in drug-impaired driving crashes. On average in 2016, someone was killed in a drunk-driving crash every 50 minutes. On Cinco de Mayo weekend, that equaled 51 lives lost in drunk-driving crashes in the nation, according to the LBPD.

Those caught can expect jail time, loss of their driver’s license, higher insurance rates, attorney fees and more. The average DUI costs about $10,000.
