10:39am | On Saturday, September 10, 2011, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the Long Beach Police Department, in conjunction with American Shredding, will host a “Shred-A-Thon” for City of Long Beach residents.  This event will be held at Ability First Community Center, located at 3770 E. Willow Street, Long Beach, (corner of Willow Street and Grand Avenue).

Identity Theft is the fastest growing crime in the United States.  It affects 9 million victims per year, with annual losses that exceed 50 billion dollars.  The Federal Trade Commission reports that 1 out of 4 people will become a victim in their lifetime.

As a result of these staggering statistics, the Long Beach Police Department would like to emphasize the importance of destroying personal information, and provide the community with an opportunity to properly dispose of their personal financial records (credit card and bank statements, pre-approved credit card applications, receipts, etc.).

Long Beach residents are invited to bring up to 10 boxes (per vehicle) of personal documents for shredding free of charge.  The boxes can be dropped off using the “drive-thru” service that will be provided.  A $5.00 fee will be charged for each additional box.
