1:40pm | New York Life Insurance Company has awarded the Long Beach Public Library Foundation a $10,000 Community Impact Grant, to support the Family Learning Center Program.

According to the Foundation’s website, since the first Family Learning Center opened, the twelve Long Beach Family Learning Centers have supported over 225,000 requests for assistance. The Centers are designed to address the full range of education, information and learning needs of at-risk children and families. The Homework Helpers are often college-age students who love what they do and many are training to become teachers. They help provide families with quality bilingual homework assistance, English literacy skills, encouragement from positive role models, access to computers and educational software and supervised Internet assistance.

New York Life Insurance Company’s Community Impact Grant program, which began in 2008, awards grants of up to $25,000 to local nonprofit organizations which are supported by New York Life agents, field managers and employees and address the needs of the community. One hundred eighty-five grants totaling over $2.1 million have been awarded since the program’s inception.
