Long Beach health officials reported five additional people died of COVID-19, including four individuals associated with long-term care facilities.

Three of those who died were in their 60s and two were in their 80s.

The city has now reported 208 deaths due to COVID-19, all of whom had underlying health conditions except one case that is still being investigated.

Long Beach also reported another 94 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 10,241 cases.

Long Beach health officials also reported that the city’s positivity rate among those who are tested is 7.7%, which is below the state’s requirement of no more than 8%. The city and Los Angeles County also fell below the threshold of 200 positive cases per 100,000 residents, which may allow schools to apply for a waiver with the state to reopen if the numbers continue to show improvement.

County officials said Tuesday they are working to assess the new guidance issued Tuesday by the state before opening up the waiver process.

Los Angeles County on Tuesday reported another 51 deaths due to the coronavirus, along with 989 new cases. It’s the first time the daily total number of new cases has dropped below 1,000 since early June.

Orange County, meanwhile, is off the state’s monitoring list, which means schools may be able to reopen there in early September.
