Across Los Angeles County this Thursday, public transit systems—including Long Beach Transit and Metro—will be offering free rides in the name of Bike to Work Day this Thursday.
For Long Beachers, if you bring your bike on the Blue Line, you will happily be able to ride for free (though we forewarn: the Metro isn’t like the BART, where train cabins are built to host bikes so you may be seeing the type of cramping that is typical during events like CicLAvia).
If you hop on the Blue Line at the Anaheim Station along Long Beach Boulevard, you’ll be greeted by the folks from BIKEable Communities with free coffee, juice and bagels from 6:30AM to 8:30AM. According to Allan Crawford, executive director of BIKEable Communities and former Mobility Coordinator for the City of Long Beach, this station was chosen because of its particularly high volume of riders with bikes.
“Long Beach has over the past seven years doubled the number of people who bicycle on a regular basis,” Crawford said. “And many of these riders are using their bikes to get to and from work. This Thursday, get on your bike and commute to work—you will find it a great experience.”
Additionally, free rides on Long Beach Transit will be offered to comuniting cyclists throughout the city. For those locals visiting other cities, the following transit systems will also be offering free rides for bikers: all other Metro lines/buses (provided you have your bike), Glendale Beeline, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit System, Torrance Transit, DASH & Commute Express, Beach Cities Transit, City of El Monte Transit, and Pasadena ARTS.
