The Long Beach Utilities Department issued a scam alert Friday to warn customers of the potential impersonation of city employees.

“Long Beach Utilities will never send a representative to a customer’s home to promote/sell residential water filter/treatment systems or offer to test water quality inside their home, without a scheduled appointment,” according to the utility.

The warning comes in the wake of a major water main break that caused the department to issue a boil-water notice as it did extensive testing on the city’s tap water. The notice has since been lifted after officials confirmed the water was safe to drink.

“If a representative from Long Beach Utilities does visit a utility customer for a water, sewer or gas-related service, customers may request to see the official department employee identification. Customers may also call 562-570-2390 to speak with the representative’s supervisor for additional verification,” the alert reads.
