Utility customers will be saving a few dollars each month now that the city announced it will no longer charge convenience fees to those paying by debit or credit card or eCheck, which is an electronic check.

Effective Monday, Oct. 8, customers who pay by credit or debit card will not be charged an additional $3.75 per payment and customers paying by eCheck will not have to pay 95 cents.

“Eliminating this charge has been a priority for us and I’m glad we are finally implementing this change,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “No resident should be penalized for paying utilities online and glad that past practice ends today.”

Utility customers will also have the option of paying their bills, including shut-off notices, in cash at any CVS Pharmacy or 7-Eleven location in the U.S. without being charged $1.50, officials said. This will be effective starting Monday, Oct. 15. Payments will be applied to the accounts the same day.
