A Hawthorne man was arrested Monday evening on suspicion of killing 46-year-old Long Beach resident Ryan Pearson last week, police said.

Kelly Anderson Bayloe, 49, was booked on one count of murder following an investigation that led detectives to believe he was the gunman who shot Pearson after an argument in North Long Beach, the Long Beach Police Department said in a press release Tuesday afternoon. Bayloe’s bail was set at $2 million, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department inmate records show.

Bayloe is accused of shooting Pearson sometime after 9 p.m. in the 6100 block of Long Beach Boulevard in the city’s Coolidge Triangle neighborhood, according to police.

Pearson was among a group of people in the area when Bayloe walked up to them, police said. An argument ensued between the group and Bayloe, which escalated to the shooting, police said. Bayloe and the group of people he had been arguing with fled the scene before police could respond.

When officers arrived at the scene of the shooting around 9:13 p.m., they found Pearson suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body and rendered aid to him until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived and transported him to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said. No other injuries were reported.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation. Detectives are expected to present their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office later this week, the LBPD said.
