Long Beach Police on Monday arrested a 26-year-old Norwalk man for an alleged drunken driving crash that left a hole in the guard railing along the Second Street bridge in Belmont Shore.

Police said Kyle Lee Ramirez was driving in the area of Second Street and The Toledo around 1:50 a.m. on Monday when he crashed into the bridge guard railing on eastbound Second Street just past Bay Shore Avenue, leaving a roughly 20-foot-long hole in the railing.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident and Ramirez’s car did not end up in the water, but the crash left neighbors talking about the damage.

In a Facebook post, Councilwoman Suzie Price said “a number of residents” asked her about what had happened.

Police said Ramirez suffered minor injuries to the upper torso and was treated at a hospital. Public Works staff put up barricades around the open portion of the bridge while the city works to repair the damage.

Ramirez was arrested at the hospital on suspicion driving under the influence of alcohol, police said. He was later released from the hospital and held at the Long Beach Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
