An unidentified man died Tuesday morning after jumping off the Gerald Desmond Bridge, Long Beach police said.
The man was transported to the hospital by Long Beach Fire Department, where he was pronounced dead, said Marlene Arrona of the Long Beach Police Department. His name is being withheld, pending notification of his family.
Authorities were first called to the bridge at about 7:30AM for a possible attempted suicide. There was also a report of a stalled U-Haul van on the bridge, according to the Long Beach Press-Telegram, which cited the CHP incident report website that no longer displays a record of the incident. Responding officers found the van empty, but saw a man wearing a leather jacket climbing the bridge and they tried to talk him down, the newspaper reported.
The bridge was closed for a time in both directions before being reopened.
No reported suicides have occurred on the Gerald Desmond Bridge since 2001, when a Huntington Beach man leaped after a 22-hour standoff with police. Director Tony Scott committed suicide by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in August 2012 and last month another man jumped off the Vincent Thomas, closing the bridge for several hours in both directions.
