Light bars on an ambulance.

A 55-year-old man died Wednesday morning after stepping into traffic on Anaheim Street and being hit by a big rig, police said.

Officers were called to Anaheim Street and Santa Fe Avenue around 10:35 a.m. Wednesday about a crash between a semi-truck and a pedestrian. There, they saw a man lying in the roadway with life threatening injuries to his upper body and the truck stopped along the curb, police said.

Paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He is only being identified as a 55-year-old man from Pico Rivera, pending notification of his next of kin, according to police.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was walking westbound on the south sidewalk of Anaheim Street when, for an unknown reason, he stepped into traffic and was struck by the tractor trailer that was traveling eastbound on Anaheim Street in the number three lane,” police said in a release.

The driver of the truck stayed on scene, cooperated with police and was licensed.

Police ask that anyone with information on this incident to call Detective Allen Duncan at 562-570-7355.

Editors note: The original release from the LBPD stated the pedestrian who died was 25 years old. The story has been updated to show he was 55 years old.
